A brand-new paper - code RA - becomes the 30th paper in GATE. It is the first new paper added since Data Science & AI (DA) arrived in 2024.

Robotics & Automation (RA)
The new paper code RA is the 30th paper in GATE. Here's why it exists, who it's for, and how it relates to CS and DA.
RA = Robotics & Automation
A GATE test paper (the 30th paper).
RA = Research Assistantship
A type of M.Tech admission and funding.
Same letters. Completely different things.
Why it was introduced
Robotics and automation is a fast-growing field. RA becomes the 30th paper and the first new one since Data Science & AI (DA) arrived in 2024, GATE keeping pace with industry demand.
Who should consider it
Mechatronics and electronics students, people working in robotics labs, and anyone specifically targeting a robotics M.Tech programme that now accepts an RA score.
Who should NOT choose it
Pure CSE aspirants chasing CS/DA seats. Outside of maths and data structures, most of the syllabus (mechatronics, sensors, actuators, control systems) is fresh material.
Career opportunities
Industrial automation, autonomous systems, embedded and control engineering, and robotics research roles, plus M.Tech routes at institutes building out robotics programmes.
Relation with CSE
The overlap with a CS syllabus is essentially the Engineering Mathematics and the Data Structures portion, plus Python, which sits in the compulsory Part A. Everything else is new.
Relation with DA
DA candidates share the maths and programming foundations, and RA is an allowed second paper for DA. But the robotics-specific content is a separate world of study.
How the RA paper is built
100 marks, 3 hours. General Aptitude + a common compulsory Part A + one chosen Part B - selected inside the exam, not at application time.
General Aptitude
Common to every GATE paper.
Part A - Common & Compulsory
Same for everyone who writes RA.
Part B - Choose One (inside the exam)
You pick B1 or B2 during the examination, not at application time.
Analog circuits, embedded systems, signals & systems, control systems.
Mechanics of materials, kinematics & dynamics, machine design, CIM.
Python & Data Structures are compulsory

Should CSE students choose RA?
An honest, opinionated take - not official information. Here's the real trade-off before you pay for a second paper.
Pros
- Opens the door to robotics-focused M.Tech programmes that didn't accept a CS score before.
- Engineering Mathematics and Data Structures overlap directly with a CS background.
- Python Programming sits in the compulsory Part A - familiar territory for coders.
- A second, differentiated score can widen your admission options.
Cons
- Most of Part A - mechatronics, sensors, actuators, control systems - is fresh syllabus.
- Part B (Electrical or Mechanical) has almost no CS overlap.
- A second paper means double the fee and a second exam slot.
- Split revision time in the final month can hurt your primary paper.
Who should consider it
- You come from a mechatronics or electronics background.
- You already work in or around a robotics lab.
- You are specifically targeting robotics M.Tech programmes.
Who should avoid it
- You are a pure CSE aspirant chasing CS/DA seats.
- You would be starting mechatronics and control systems from scratch.
- You are treating a second paper as a 'hedge' rather than a real target.
Only Maths, Data Structures and Python carry across.
Mechatronics, control systems and Part B are all fresh.
My Opinion
- not official
For most CSE aspirants, RA is not worth it as a second paper. The only real overlap with a CS syllabus is the mathematics and the data-structures portion - everything else is mechatronics, sensors, actuators and control systems, which is a lot of fresh material. But if you come from mechatronics, work in a robotics lab, or you are specifically targeting robotics M.Tech programmes, a door just opened that did not exist last year.

This one affects every single applicant, whatever your branch. It is recommended to register in DigiLocker (verified) for a smooth process during application and at the exam centres.

Application fees, per paper
Fees are charged per paper. Below are the two categories - pick your row, then check the regular vs extended (late-fee) amounts.

OBC-NCL and EWS get no concession here.
Fees are per paper - a second paper costs exactly double, with no discount.
You do not upload any category certificate at the application stage.
The fee is non-refundable - the only exception is if GATE removes a two-paper combination you had paid for.

Two-paper combinations
You can write a second paper - but only from an allowed list. Pick your primary paper below and see exactly which second papers are permitted.
CS + DA - the obvious pairing
The most popular combination, and for good reason.
CS + DA has the highest overlap of any combination - discrete mathematics, probability, linear algebra and algorithms all carry across. You study large parts of both papers at once.

How the GATE score actually works
The qualifying cutoff isn't a fixed number - it moves every year with how the cohort performed, floored at 25 and capped at 40.
Qualifying marks
max( 25, min( 40, mean + std deviation ) )The cutoff tracks the cohort - a harder year lowers it, a stronger year raises it - but it can never drop below 25 or rise above 40.
The GATE score you get if you land exactly at the qualifying cutoff.
The score at the average of the top 0.1% of candidates.
